Join the Manhattan Chamber Players for a recital of masterworks for piano and strings that were almost not committed to the page. MCP Artistic Director Luke Fleming will serve as a guide through the fascinating, unique histories of Mozart’s second Piano Quartet and Brahms’ sole Piano Quintet, two brilliant compositions that are now pillars of the core chamber music repertoire.

These masterpieces exist today thanks not only to the inspiration and genius of their respective composers but also to the sheer persistence that led them to be brought to life and shared with the world.

If any piece of music requires of the players absolutely perfect ensemble, it is Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.” All 13 musicians walk a tightrope on this piece, with the slightest misstep likely to spell doom. One can only assume the MCP have played this piece together a thousand times. Otherwise, there’s no explaining their insane precision. In fact, a performance at this level sets the bar and makes you feel you’ve never heard the piece before. Because you literally haven’t.
