The Richard Underhill Quintet returns to The Northern Lights Music Festival for an unforgettable evening, blending timeless jazz standards with a sprinkling of melodic original tunes, all backed by our Festival String Orchestra.

Led by the legendary saxophonist Richard Underhill, this dynamic ensemble will take you on a musical journey through the rich traditions of jazz. We are thrilled to welcome multiple Juno Award-winning vocalist Caity Gyorgy, whose captivating voice adds a new dimension to the performance.

Alongside Underhill, the band features renowned pianist and composer Mark Limacher, the incredible rhythm master Daniel Barnes on drums, Joseph Phillips on bass, and the brilliant Marie Goudy on trumpet.

With their collective artistry and boundless energy, this concert promises to be an exhilarating fusion of jazz and classical music, offering an evening of both elegance and excitement that is sure to leave you wanting more.

“Richard Underhill’s warm alto sound, great writing and arranging skills and in-from-the-outside soloing make him one of Canada’s most distinctive jazz performers.” – AllAboutJazz

Canadian jazz singer Caity Gyorgy, in addition to having a warm voice and swinging phrasing, is a skilled songwriter whose originals sound as if they are from the 1950s with more modern lyrics. – Scott Yanow, Downbeat

All I can say is Caity deserves a big band, some saxophones, a little extra instrumental pinache to compliment her showgirl energy. – Sputnik Music

“Hailing from Calgary, singer-songwriter Gyorgy recently became the youngest ever two-time winner of the JUNO for Best Vocal Jazz Album, for last year’s Featuring (having previously won with Now Pronouncing: Caity Gyorgy in 2022). And it’s clear to hear why: her pristine vocals have a breathy clarity, precision and dynamic range to rival Ella herself—and that isn’t a comparison any halfway respectable jazz critic makes lightly.” – The Syncopated Times
